The Huichol Art Project

In the Sierra Madre of Mexico, the Huichol people are living as they have for thousands of generations, in communion with nature and each other. Never conquered by outsiders, their sacred traditions and connection to the Gods have remained intact. Their lives center around sacred rituals and tradition, everything from planting corn to embroidering clothes done in a sacred way, their artwork alive with their experience of the Divine.

The Huichol Art Project was founded as part of Blue Deer Centers charitable giving to support the Huichol's way of life. Through this project, we create markets in the United States and internationally for the sale of their sacred artwork. This enables many Huichol families to remain in their homeland and maintain their lifeways. We make two to three trips to the Huichol homelands each year to purchase directly from the artists.

At Blue Deer, we offer a Huichol Art Gallery where a range of the artwork is on display. A council of volunteers manage this project.
